Although small country with only 2 and a half million citizen Republic of Macedonia is rich with natural beauty expressed through numerous geomorphology forms – mountains, valleys, fields, gorges, caves, and several hydro graphic forms – springs, rivers, waterfalls, lakes and artificial reservoirs. There are various beautiful towns which offer many interesting things for visiting. Macedonia attracts a big number of tourists and everyone who has been there, has left with excitement.
Archaeological town Stobi, located 3 km from the motorway exit of Urban E-75, is worth visiting at least for two reasons. If you’re curious researcher you will be able to experience the rare class archeology in real time, and if you’re one of those others who build their impression on the visual experience of Stobi then you can get a wonderful view of the central territory of Macedonian .
The urban image of ancient Stobi was completed thanks to the historical and literary documents, as well as the registered archaeological material from the systematic research. Some sources suggest its beginnings before the 7th and 6th century BC. AD, which underpin and discovered bronze items dating from the Archaic period, and ceramic finds from the Neolithic and Iron Age.
Stobi for the first time was mentioned in documents in 2 BC. AD, but archeologists believe that this city was populated at least 400 years earlier. In the past it was the largest city in the northern part of the Roman province of Macedonia and was significant urban, administrative, commercial and military center of the two great empires in that time Byzantine and Roman. In this city the coins first began to be minted and nowadays and were called denari.
This town contains 26 buildings, theater, synagogue, palaces and houses. Nowadays it is one of the most important archeological cities in Macedonia. Most important in Strobi is the amphitheater where the gladiators fought till death. The names of the powerful families were engraved on the stoned seats so they always sat on the same place.
At the exit of the town Bitola is situated the ancient city Heraclea. It is the archeological and architectural pride of Macedonia. The founder of this city was King Philip 2 of Macedonia. This town got its name after the mythological hero Herades. There are few stoned buildings which King Philip 5 had built them for control and protection of the kingdom. The Roman influence is evident through the architecture of the city.
One of the most fascinating things in this town is the amphitheater located above the urban center. There are also colorful mosaics which remained in excellent condition and those attract most of the visitors which came in this ancient city. One mosaic represents the cosmos and the surrounding represent certain segments of the cosmos.The city had all the material conditions: pasture, plain for cereals, bastions, and the acropolis hill there was a separate fortress, with walls attached to the wall of the city.
Skopje is the capital and biggest city in Macedonia, also an administrative, economic, cultural, and educational center. It is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula spread on the banks of the river Vardar. The ancient name is Skupi. The name was changed many times according to the historical circumstances.
There are many touristic destinations worth visiting like the stone bridge, which was built in the XV century and it is in t center of the city, it is a connection between the new part of the city and the old. Also another thing that tourists admire is the fortress Kale whose first walls were built in the beginning of VI century. Old Bazaar is a shopping, cultural and historical part of Skopje and one of the major landmarks of this city. It is located in the area of the Stone Bridge next to the Old Bazaar. According to the administrative division of the city, the bazaar area is located between the municipalities Chair and Center.
Ottoman architecture prevails in the Old Bazaar although lately there are signs of modern architecture. Many of the buildings that were used for visitors staying overnight are now serve for cultural and artistic events.
Vodno is ancient Macedonian mountain situated in the southern part in the Skopje valley. Vodno has good geographical position because it is the most crowded place in Skopje due to the important roads and railways. The highest point of the mountain Vodno is is Krstovar peak which is 1066 meters high, where the Millennium Cross is situated. The climate in Vodno is warm.
At different times of the year the climate is very different so that the average temperature is 23 C °. The lowest temperature measured has been -15 C °, and the highest measured temperature 43 C °. The flora of the mountain is diverse. Chesnutt is most common but there are also birch and oak. Representatives of wildlife are: partridge, hare, fox, squirrel, marten, snakes, insects and wild boar.
Matka Canyon covers an area of about 5.000 ha and is located 17 km southwest of Skopje.It is canyon on the river Treska. In this area, special attention is given to the ten caves which length is from 20 to 176 meters and the two depths of 35 meters. Canyon was one of the largest refugee centers during the glacial period, which today contributed for the large number of endemic plants and animals.
Out of 1,000 species of plants, 20% are endemic. In the canyon Matka were discovered two new species of real spider and 5 false scorpions. The canyon registered 119 day and 140 night species of butterflies. It is important to note that in the canyon encountered 77 species small endemic butterflies, and another 18 other species are new for the science.
Due to the characteristics of the terrain and difficult accessibility in the past in this canyon were built a large number of churches, monasteries and other sacred objects. Due to the large number of churches and monasteries, Canyon bears the name Holy Forest. Today there are many churches of the medieval period, most of which are remained but and some are in ruins.
Ohrid is a city in southwestern Macedonia, with 42 033 inhabitants, it is one of the main tourist destinations in Macedonia due to the fact that it has the largest natural lake in Macedonia. The lake bears the name of the city and it is called Ohrid Lake. The lake Ohrid is one of the biggest and most important of the natural lakes of Macedonia and it is the most important aqua ecosystem in Europe.Due to the large number of churches and monasteries, the city is known as the Balkan and European Jerusalem.
Ohrid is known as the “city of light” which is the literal translation of its old name, Lychnidos. There a large number of beautiful beaches and also a large number of places worth visiting: Samuel’s Fortress , the Icon Gallery, Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments and National Museum – houses the Robevci and Hristo Uzunov ,Museum of Slavic Literacy (XVIII century) ancient amphitheater, Memorial house Prlicev ,St. Clement University and the archaeological founds of Plaosnik. Every year it is hosted international swimming marathon.
Prespa is a a medieval town, situated in south-western Macedonia. It was a birth place of the macedonian emperor Samuel. The toponym Prespa is used for a lake, island settlement or simply an island. Only 11 native fish species are known from the lake, but 9 of these are endemic.
It is touristic place and it is vacation destination for many people. The lake Big Prespa is divided among Macedonia, Greece and Albania and also the lake Small Prespa. In the past the Greek part of the Prespa was military not populated area and it was required special permission for outsiders to get in. During the Greek Civil War great number of the inhabitants emigrated to escape poverty.

Dojran is a city situated on the western shore of the lake Dojran in Macedonia. In the first world was the city was destroyed and on the territory of this ruined city today there are two villages: New Dojran and Old Dojran. In Old Dojran there are old ruins and also a large number of hotels, restaurants and resorts.
Dojran is another touristic vacation destination. Its waters are said to be healing and many people with illness go there and heal themselves. It has Mediterranean climate. In the upper part of the city it is located the Amam which is a Turkish bath. Dojran is architecturally important due to the numerous discoveries like Greek inscriptions, coins, tombs and epitaphs.
It is historically very important city for Macedonia. It is the highest town in Macedonia 1350 m above sea level. The town of Krushevo was once the seat of the Krushevo Municipality. Krushevo is a mountainous town, in winter there is always snow and many people go for skiing.Krushevo is known for its 19th-century domestic architecture.
The town has old houses built in the style of old Macedonian architecture. It is home to Mechkin Kamen, a historical landmark. On August 2 every year, it is celebrated Day of the Republic. There is also the memorial house of one of the most famous Macedonian singers Tose Proeski.
Mavrovo is a village and tourist resort in the mountainous region of western Macedonia. It is situated in Mavrovo municipality. Mavrovo is a destination for many tourists in all times of the, especially in winter due to its skiing center, lake and national park. The natural beauty of the local landscapes enchants those who enjoy to walk, hike, swim, cycle and go on fishing..
There are many hotels, weekend houses and cottages which offer accommodation for the tourists all year round. There is situated the St Nicholas Church in Mavrovo, built in 1850. There is also the Mavrovo national park which is one of the largest national parks in Macedonia. Shara and Bistra mountains are spread in the theory of Mavrovo. The lake Mavrovo freezes every year. From fauna it is full with trout and other fish. Above the lake is the forest rising from all sides around the clean water, which gives special beautiful landscape.
